The live shoots have become part of family folklore, with many a tale of action props for Thunderbirds and
Space Patrol going spectacularly wrong with minutes left to broadcast and last minute desperation (the
mother of invention?) saving the day.
Did you know that the rocket thrusters on those early models were Oxy-Acetylene gas torches?
I should also say that many of the sets were built of Expanded polystyrene in the days before anyone
had thought that it would be a good idea to make a flame retardant version!
I probably don't need to say too much more, however I am told that having a grandfather in the Fire Brigade helped ease
one or two awkward moments.
