Freeborn's was started as a company in 1955, when my father, a sculptor, and mother, a costume designer and milliner, started working from their houseboat on the Thames at Kingston.
Many of their student day contacts had by this time become involved with T.V, in particular ABC TV which was based a couple of miles downstream at Hampton Wick.
A natural progression was that, as items were required by the Studio, my parents became involved in producing them for their contacts. At first everything that was needed had to be made in small enough parts to be 'off-loaded' through a the cabin door not an easy feat with things like a 10' high Cyclops.
As the work started to become more regular a land based studio 'The Shed' was rented at the 'Burgoynes Boat Yard'.
